The Heermann Homestead began in 1971, when Dan & Carole Heermann purchased miniature horses to run on vacant land from their land developments. The miniature horses currently share 170 heavily wooded acres in Southwestern Washington State with miniature donkeys and a Watusi. Through the years the Heermann name has become well known in miniature horse circles. In fact, in 1997, Heermann's Gentleman Joe won the very prestigious honor of Best All Around Horse at the American Miniature Horse Association's National Show. Then in 2000 he went back and won National Grand Champion Country Pleasure Driving and High Point Youth with Maja Albee. In 1998, another Heermann horse, Heermann's Whiskey Light won the very strong competition as he and his handler, Rebecca McMillian, were named "Super Amateur Team." The mini donkeys normally foal out in the pasture and you find the babies up and nursing the next morning. As the mini horses approach foaling, they are watched constantly. A devise is placed on their halters that sends a signal when the mare lays down flat on her side. The foaling stalls have closed circuit TV so that when the beeper goes off a look at the screen to see if the mare is just resting or in labor saves many trips to the barn. When the miniature foals are born they are normally anywhere from 17" to 19" tall and only weigh about 15 pounds. It is not unusual at all to arrive at the Heermann Homestead and see someone with a baby animal of some kind in their lap with the foal sound asleep.

Their animals are sold literally all over the world. A donkey was shipped to Lord and Lady Fischer in England, two stallions to Australia, minis to Florida, Arizona, Michigan, Canada, etc. We'd love to have you come for a visit. We are located right on Interstate 5 just 30 minutes north of the Portland, Oregon airport.
